The Art of the Grimoire (MMXXVI)
A year long adventure in Book Making and the Botanical Arts
No books have been more feared, revered, or cherished than the grimoire. Traditionally, these witch’s books were living companions—part herbal, part spellbook, part family archive—a weaving together of recipes, rituals, memories, and magic.
In this intimate year-long workshop, you will craft your own modern-day grimoire: a singular artist book that reflects your story, your creativity, and your connection with the natural world. Part bookmaking, part botanical art, part ceremony, this experience invites you to create a life-book that is both deeply personal and visually enchanting.
Through guided exercises, journaling, and hands-on exploration, you’ll be supported in tending your stories and preserving them in a form that can be held, remembered, and passed on.
Each session is an invitation to wonder—where plants, memory, and creativity intertwine.
What you’ll explore and create:
Bookbinding: From playful and experimental to historic structures
Eco-printing & alternative photography with plants
Papermaking from botanical fibers
Plant-based inks, dyes, & image transfers
Pressed plants, end papers, and book cloth
Archival practices to help your grimoire endure
By the end of the year, you will hold in your hands a book of power and beauty—a unique testament to your place in the world, a grimoire alive with recipes, rituals, ancestral memory, and creative magic.

Some words from a current student:
“Stepping into the studio to create a grimoire with Tony(a) and our wonderful group has been a great pleasure. I signed up for the class with enthusiasm and anticipation…. But as is always the case with Tony’s classes it has been so much more than I expected. I have learned so many new skills, and created so many beautiful books, culminating in my final book… a family grimoire. I enjoy T’s attention to detail and respect for the historical practice of book making. I appreciate the depth of inner growth that I have experienced in all of T’s classes. I learned a lot about myself, and built/deepened friendships. I am so grateful for this joyful, creative class in these tumultuous times.” JMS Feb 2025
