Self Care as an Artist Webinar

Caring for myself is not self-indulgence.

It is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”

Audre Lorde

It is no secret that modern day life is rife with stress. While many of us have become adept at adapting to and performing under stressful conditions, the truth is that chronic stress takes its toll on all aspects of our health and creative practices: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. While art-making is a respite for many, it too can take a toll on us physically (long hours of sitting, repetitive use injuries to our joints), mentally (brain fog, exhaustion and stuckness) and spiritually (disconnection and isolation) if we don’t have measures of maintenance. In this 2-hour webinar, Tony(a) Lemos will bring her experience as an herbalist, holistic health coach and artist, sharing tips for caring for the active artist’s mind, body and spirit.

The best road to self care is to establish simple, daily practices which remind you of the gifts, benefits, blessings you enjoy and the goodness that prevails in your life. Step by step we can reset our past programming and begin to treat ourselves with love. Success requires us to be prepared and to have our medicines and our protocols available at a moment’s notice, to be disciplined in our self care, to be humble in asking for help and to be brave in managing the forces. By creating reliable self-care habits we can be more present, make clearer decisions, and begin to unlock the fullness of life.

The webinar will begin with Tony(a) sharing her top 10 simple herbal tips for self care as we age. From there we will cover stress as it can negatively impact an artist’s creativity and mental health, and then delve into the holistic approach to self-care for stress management. Participants will walk away with an understanding of lifestyle practices and herbs that can transform your response to stress and enhance your well-being. We will also address pain and pain management, talking about repetitive strain injuries and chronic inflammatory conditions which make it harder to work and can impact art-making. The class will conclude with a recipe for how to build and use a “self care box” so you can apply what you have learned to your future practice.

Western Mass Herbal Symposium

As Herbalists we have long discussed lifestyle as part of the holistic herbal protocol (nutrition, exercise, spiritual practice and even home environment) but we've not yet addressed creativity. The need for a creative practice has been missing from this discussion. During this class we will explore all the ways in which a creative arts practice promotes wellbeing on physical, mental and spiritual health. In addition to a basic creative practice working with plants in an art practice is another way in which one can deepen ones understanding of and partnership with plants and the natural world which ultimately leads to a more rooted sense of place and a deep inner understanding of interconnectedness.
